CHANNEL CHATTER:
Tell us about your channel - send info to newsletter@starlink-irc.org

#Boardwalk
A few months ago, after driving our local IRC Ops nuts with questions, we applied for a channel here on Starlink-IRC. I feel it was one of the best decisions we could have made. Our channel was formed and we began our life here. #Boardwalk is most diversified, with users from Brazil, Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, UK, Israel and yes, even the States! We have become such great friends, sharing our lives, ideas, challenges and successes. We welcome anyone who feels a need for warmth, fun, and casual relaxing chat. Our channel contains many talents, from puter gurus WileCoyote, Sluggo, Thumbs, Snag; ISP guru Patches98; popups king Dish; comedian Planty, to we Queens of Chat DreamQuest, Quiche, Sandra and me, Lippi. If ya decide to give us a try, remember to congratulate WileCoyote on his new job - way to go, Wiley! Sluggo, congrats on your new niece - Dishy on your new house. Glad you're feeling better, Sandra! Again, warm wishes to everyone, and have a Happy Thanksgiving :)
Huggs, Lippi
#Veterans
#Veterans invites all veterans, their families and friends to join us! Who knows, you may run into some old buddy or friend you haven't seen in years. It's a great place to make new friends with other veterans and their families and friends. We are not using any set format for conversation, and are flexible as to what the topic can be (within reason, of course :) We will tailor the mood of the channel to fit the people that are there at any given time, and we do not allow any personal abuse whatsoever. Drop by and tell us about your military service!

#50chat
#50chat is a cybertown where people from all over the world come together to share their collective experiences. They all laugh with/at each other, help each other with techie problems, cry in our beer together, and just generally tell jokes, schmooze, and keep up with each other. This is a non-threatening, non-warez, supportive and mellow atmosphere...sounds pretty boring, huh, but it's NEVER a dull moment on #50chat!
Their ops are:
  • springer, a nurse in Washington DC
  • Stretch, channel owner, computer aided design operator for a computer company from St Paul
  • annie^ in Ohio, a social worker and owner of a bed and breakfast
rusty of Queensland AU on the ocean
  • Tzip, a resource teacher in Salt Lake City, Utah
  • guppy^, a school bus driver, born and raised in Chautaugua Co, NY
  • chicklet, whose computer and sewing machine vie for her attention iwillok bobby, the newest op
  • The website is: www.2z.net/s/50chat.htm
    #Crittercat
Who can forget their first experiences of the Internet? I was bold enough to advertise for pen friends and got nearly 30 responses. "Hi, I'm Joe from Brazil -- Kate from Toronto -- Billy from Alabama -- Ingar from Norway, etc." and among them was Treecat from Williamslake. (where the devil was Williamslake?) Little did I know that within a year or so my wife and I would be there about 10,000 miles or more away, sipping cups of coffee with Treecat herself and enjoying her hospitality and the purring of the real Treecat - that little 4-legged creature who runs the home and whose demands must be met instantly. Of course, a lot went on between that first contact and our arrival in Canada as part of a Rotary tour, and it was the IRC that became the medium through which ideas, questions and answers were exchanged.
Treecat asked if I would become an "op" for her new channel called "crittercat". For some time Treecat, Critter and I, as Deer, had been talking daily on IRC. I didnt have a clue what an "op" was, but I would agree to anything rather than disagree with Treecat! But I suppose for me IRC is a lot about learning about "things" and you people way over there and the way you think.
One thing I learned is that when a little white tail wags over there, it gets filled with buckshot! So, Deer may have been an unfortunate nick.
From time to time I get roasted, boled, grilled, hamburgered, salted, stewed, BBQ's and just now and hugged and that makes it all worth while. Of course, cats are more likely to be stroked, patted and cuddled, so if I could find a good cat name I would probably adopt it. But they are nearly all taken. There are Partycats, Pinkcats, Lelicats, Kittys and just about every cat imagineable. #Crittercat is becoming quite a menagerie - with nicks like Snowy Owl, McQuack and nicks which are just personal like Maia, Section, Al and Everson.
Treecat is the channel's guardian angel. I don't think the greatest bull in the stampede could kick like her when someone says that "f" word or something else objectionable (like asking our age! - no, just kidding.) Some of the crittercatters are quite expert in the technicalities of the system, and we have wav's that wish people a merry Xmas or play some popular tune. (Loved dancing the macarena with Party.) Pinkcat and Maia are the experts on colour. You feel like you are in the middle of a grand fireworks display. I love to send and receive pictures while on IRC, and know what some of my crittercat friends look like and that is great, and they know what I look like and that is not so great. It is great talking across the world from Australia. I don't even have accent trouble. If I order a "cake" I dont get a "coke", or if I ask for my "pay" I don't get a "pie" and that is a change.
Good luck #crittercat and may the nine lives of the common moggie be an indication of your durability as a great channel.
    Deer from Australia

    WHO'S DOING WHAT?
    by Lois

Scorp of #Itsy channel told us last week of her move to Yuma AZ for the winter, and that she would talk to her friends from there. BUT -- when she received her phone bill she had been charged 5 cents a minute for each minute she had been connected with the net. This, over and above the ISP charge of $25.95 per month. The owner of the TV park has his own private telephone system and can do what he wants. Ellie, who was becoming a regular on #Itsy is at the same park and is in the same situation. Other than that problem, they are having a wonderful time, days and days of sunshine, great golfing and wonderful shopping.

Sharkie of #norwich has been chosen the channel's newest op and a member of the governing committee. Congratulations to sharkie of Iowa, whose Dad deano and Uncle willco are also ops and committee members on this family-oriented chat channel. See their pictures on #norwich's home page: http://www.rchambers.com/norwich/

Myrra of Greece, on #norwich channel, has been elected a member of the city council, and is awaiting her appointment. As she is an architect, she believes she will possibly be the Vice-Mayor for construction for the Cultural Department. Congratulations, Myrra!

Kookum of #1 channel had heart surgery again to make repairs on earlier surgery. She had a very bad time, but as of this date things are looking better...her temperature is down and she is off the very heavy medications. All of us who know Kookum are sending our prayers and best wishes for her early recovery.

A short column of made-up facts and non-information brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnid.

This little blue arachnid is wondering why #crittercat and #just4fun have been seen out together at night - they say it's just "friendhip" but some sources say otherwise...stay tuned.

Some controversy is afoot regarding the pronunciation of the net's nickname. Some say it's "ESS-LIRK", others say its "UN-DER-NET". Can anyone be sure? Can anyone care?

Server Application of the Month Award: We received a new server application the other day (not that unusual an event). The routing info was for a batch of CHATnet hosts on a SL-IRC application form but he said he wanted to connect to Othernet. Think this fellow was just a LITTLE confused? (Aren't you glad you're not on ALL the mailing lists?)

There are reports some dink is selling flannel keyboard covers on the net. This is NOT permitted since the appropriate snax and bribes have not been..er..what I mean is, we frown on unauthorized commercial advertising. <Note. If you know anyone who actually bought one of the covers, please let this columnist know..I have a bridge and some oceanfront property in Nebraska for them, too.>

A very un-knowledgeable source in the gummint has informed me the covert DNA tests have been completed. As suspected, Deathstar is a cross between a demented toaster and rug lint. This just proves that there IS a giant Government conspiracy between...

    ...the Democrats.
We, er, your government would never do such things. Ever. Trust us.
    Them. I mean them.
    Really.

ARE YOU FEELING OLD? If not, consider this: The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1980.

    * They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan era.
    * They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged
    * Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression
    * Their lifetime has always included AIDS
    * Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums
    * The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them
    * They may have heard of an 8-track, but chances are the probably have never heard or seen one.
    * The digital disc was introduced when they were only 1 year old.
    * As far as they know, stamps have always cost 32 cents
    * They have always had an answering machine
    * Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels. Much less only 2 channels without remote control.
    * They were born the year that the Walkman was introduced by Sony
    * They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool * They never took a swim and thought about Jaws
    * They don't know who Mork is or where he is from
    * They never heard the term "Where's the beef?"
    * They cannot fathom why anyone would want a rock for a pet
    * Most never even heard of a slide-rule, much less a T-square and triangle on a drawing board
    * They think the hit from LeAnn Rymes "You light up my life" is new
    * And they never waited in a gas rationing line

Hey, we're not getting older, we're getting BETTER, right?....well, right?

    FOR FRIENDS LIKE YOU -

I never thought that there would be, friends that I would never see.
Friends out there in cyberspace spread throughout the human race.
They have space inside my heart, I hope we never grow apart.
That sassy gal that I adore, for whom I care yet more and more.
A special girl that would show me, just how special 'net friends could be.
Then that big bad dude up north, who gives a laugh with a big snort.
A canuck that lives so near, his Canadian homeland he holds dear.
And a gent from my own state, who in his hands does hold his fate.
A Kiwi girl with starbright charm, who'd never do you any harm.
A darling lady, no plain Jane, who's kind words push 'way the rain.
Who would ever have thought that I'd have these friends, some 'cross the tide.
Oh wouldn't it be just a ball if we'd get together, one and all?
In my long arms I'd hug them near, and tell each one that they are dear.
We share our hopes, we share our dreams, we share most everything it seems.
So thank you friends across the 'net, you mean more than you might bet.
      08/14/98...
