#ITSY
The #Itsy story. Once upon a time, in an undernet far far away, there joined a spider. (It was Oct 95, or thereabouts). Of course, in those days, undernet was only about 800 channels, so the list was manageable (and a lot less pornographic).
Some background here.. Itsy was an NT beta tester for Bruce Switzer's "Stiletto" desktop manager program and, as a result, there was some correspondence back and forth. Bruce is from Toronto and, as it happens, while scanning the channel list, #canadian showed up. Figuring that they ought to be friendlier than the standard collection of irc cafes and bars, the spider joined #canadian. Webgirl (webby) was there, as was Amazing, and the very first thing they saw was:
<Itsy> foo!
After a while (December) it seemed like registering a channel was 'the' thing to do, the application was mailed off and, lo and behold, in January 96, #Itsy got X assigned to it. Yay! Gennywine registered channel.
Over the next couple months, #Itsy nearly tripled in size. (Course, it usually doubled in size when anybody showed up at all, but thats another story). Some regulars were Amazing, and Zoilus, not to mention the ones 'borrowed' from #canadian like webgirl, zen2, and tbg.
So, #Itsy got associated with #canadian, #oldbies, and a couple others. #oldbies is where we met TerryNZ and her magic 4x4. After a few months though, the proverbial undernet lag got pretty bad. (And, this was in the OLD days with less than 1000 channels!) So, Amazing and Itsy started hunting around for another net.
For a while, #Itsy was running (operationally) on the SuperChat network , but still homed on undernet. That only lasted a couple months, the first ones being with no bot at all, and the end of it using a bot called 'CS' (a copy of chatnet's K9, on loan from DrWho). That was also about the time g-force and Itsy established #channels and the current concept of the channel service group that still exists as CService on StarLink-IRC.
Getting fed up with the oper abuses, some lame admins and the typical chaff, a few of us one night decided to form the StarLink network. #Itsy was there for about 6 months and the history of the rather adventurous departure from there in January 1997 is covered best in the slhistry.text file on the SL-IRC website.
The rest is history, as they say. #Itsy is still "under destruction, no intelligent conversation allowed" as always and open to one and all who want to forget reality for a little while and just have fun.

WHO'S DOING WHAT?
by lois and amazing

The shortest-lived channel in Starlink-IRC History:

#Amazing_finally_got_a_channel_so_there

Amazing was sniffing over the fact that she had been on IRC for three years and never had a channel. So, suddenly there appeared her channel (name above), complete with Cstar! That proves what perserverence can do!

Our condolences and sympathy go out to treecat on the loss of her mom on Jan 4,1999 and on the loss of her step-dad on Jan 14, 1999. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time tree...*hugs*
ellegon of #Emerg_Serv_Lobby is well on the road to recovery after she underwent surgery. Glad to see your feeling better elle!!

FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnid

It has been noted by this lame ^H^H^H^ experienced reporter that we have gotten a bunch of new users who arrived with their channels here lately. They all seem nice, friendly folks. Well sure, but, THIS HAS TO STOP!! If IRC fills up with friendly people then where would we be? Write your congressperson. Write the President! (hm, you may want to address that one to "Occupant", just as a bit of advice.)

On the weird happenings front, treecat seems to have survived her encounter with those evil denizens of the northlands .. little TINY polar bears the size of cockaroaches that infest dryer ducting. It seems also she has taken up with 7 of these little polaroaches .. there's even a picture of one on the SLIRC server's page! Rumor has it there is a witch and a prince somewhere in this story. It's also true there are 8 traffic lites in Williams Lake .. also known to be involved somehow. Watch this space as your intrepid reporter invents ^H^H^H^H finds more news on this sordid affair.

We ALSO have a new server in Anaheim, California .. home of M*c*ey M*use and D*s*y*a*d. HMMMM .. now, given the above story about treecat and the 7 polaroaches, this member of the fourth estate has a hard time believing that this, too, is a coincidence. Are we being invaded? Are we going to be swallowed up in the D*s*e* empire and turned into a theme park? (Why is it called a theme park? I have NEVER seen a theme parked in any of them. Sounds like more advertising hype to me.)

According to uninformed (and cheap) sources, an unnamed dragon has recently had some annoying parts removed, which have disappeared without a trace. There is also a new admin on the "other" network. Coincidence? I think not ! You be the judge.

And as a closing note, everyone should take the lead from mailbabe (randomly seen hither and yon) who has managed to connect IRC to checking mail. Look for a new release of Micr*soft IRCMail at stores near you. Go there now and wait. (DONT do this!, Ed.) Tell them Itsy sent you.

Thats all there is for now, have a happy 99!

THE WORKSHOP - PUTER TIPS
Contributed Tips and Information

Start the New Year with a Clean Mouse

If, over a period of time you notice your mouse is getting balkier, making it harder for you to move your cursor, think, "It's not broken, it's dirty!"

The procedure to clean a mouse and trackball are essentially the same, and it's best to clean them periodically, and do not wait for it to get dirty and hard to use.

First, if you have a manual, dig it out. Read it. It may show a diagram or cutaway and possibly instructions that will make the job easier for you. You will only need a clean lint free cloth, Qtips, and a mild soap solution. Small tweezers or toothpick and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol may be useful. (Keep parts in an ashtray while working.)

Clean outside and cord with cloth moistened in soap solution and wipe dry. Turn device upside down and remove the retainer plate or bottom cover. Most can be rotated an lifted out. Some older ones have screws instead. The screw in the ball plate is usually a small phillips head screw.

Remove the ball carefully. Clean ball with moistened (not saturated) cloth and set aside to dry completely before placing it back in the mouse assembly. Blow loose dirt out of the ball cage. Be careful not to damage any of the components. You can use toothpicks or tweezers to dislodge any matted lint you may be able to see. A cotton swab lightly moistened in alcohol may be used for cleaning rollers. Look at the rollers inside and if you see dark lines of dirt which have built up, clean from side to side with Qtip and alcohol.

Place ball back in cage and replace the bottom cover, and your mouse will be as good as new!

Incidentally, complete the job by cleaning off your mouse pad to remove all dust, oil or crumbs -- wash or vacuum it, depending upon its material.

---- 'CYBER LOVESICK BLUES ----
- I've got the cyber lovesick blues
Oh Lord, since my connection went away
My computer is broken
Now there's nothing to say
Okay, now what am I to do?
Well, I think I'm gonna die
Oh, I can't chat
I can't write
It's got that kind of power
Lord I love to hear it,
when it says, there's maieeellll
Such a beautiful sound
I hate to think it's all over
I lost my world it seems
I've grown so used to it somehow
Well I've nobody to talk to now
I'm lonesome
I've got the cyber lovesick blues
Well I'm in love, I'm in love
with this durn machine
that's what the matter with me
I'm love I'm in love
with this durn machine
but it don't care about me
Lord I tried and I tried to keep it bootin up
but it just won't play but now that it is broken
and I know it is gone this is all I can say
I've got the cyber internet blues
Oh Lord, since my connection went away
My computer is broken
Now there's nothing to say
Okay, now what am I to do?
Well, I think I'm gonna die
Oh, I can't chat
I can't write It's got that kind of power
Lord I love to hear it,

-- Faceless Friends --

Your face, your smile, I have never seen
I don't know the color of your skin
Your voice and laughter I have never heard
I don't know if it is soft or loud
Your hugs I have never felt
I don't know the strength of your arms
Your hand I have never touched
I don't know if it is calloused and worn
But to me you are my friend
Dearer and sweeter than many I've found
The questions come to me, "How can that be?"
"You don't know a face, a touch, or a sound."
But is it the physical nature of a person
That causes me to call you "my friend"
Or the feel of a touch or the strength of a hug
I don't need those for you to be my friend
You have shared with me words of strength
At times I have felt weak and worn
You have brought to me a smile, a laugh
Uplifting me and bringing me joy
You have bent your "ear" to me and listened
Then gently guided and directed with your words
You have hugged me tight, wiped my tears
Then generously gave to me above and beyond
You are more to me than words on a screen
For behind those words is a person who cares
A person with feelings, a tear, and a laugh
Who holds my mind safe and secure
For even though I don't know your face, your touch
I feel and see you in my mind Y
ou have been all to me that I've needed you to be
Now and forever within my heart...
My faceless Friend....
