A new support channel, #FAS, is now open. HIDDEN TREASURES OF SL-IRC (by debA)
I thought it might be a nice idea to interview some interesting people who are Starlink-IRC regular chatters that SL-IRC people might not get to know unless they were hanging around the channel where these people could be found. I normally can be found in #Just4Fun and I chose to interview our very own Pops aka poips. Pops has always tickled my funny bone whenever he has shown up in channel .......so let's get to know Pops. :)
<DebA> Hey pops......can I do an interview with you for the starlink-irc newsletter?
<poips> sure. I'm an open book. trouble is, everybody has already read me Pops has been married to the same lady for quite some time. How long?
<pops> 52 great years
<poips> 53 years in July
<poips> July 13, the lucky day
<poips> We were married in St. Luke's Cathedral in Ancon, CZ What was Pops willing to share about Mrs. Pops?
<poips> Now there is the gold mine in our family
<poips> Mom is an elegant lady, we're both 81. Pops and Mom's children?
<poips> Got two solid gold kids, a boy and a girl How long has Pops been chatting?
<poips> I couldn't keep my mouth shut when I was born!!!!!!
<poips> My first sentence was "when are they going to invent MIRC?" How did Pops get started with computers?
<poips> Let's see, I retired about 17 years ago so I must have got hooked about 15 years ago.
<poips> While I was working, I was using computers. When I retired, that was the one big thing I missed so I had to get one. It was a Franklin--strictly floppy disks. There wasn't a net then
<DebA> how did you become part of #just4fun?
<poips> roaming around--a newbie--and I ran into Fern. She told me about some good places
<poips> Carol, debo and juju adopted me the first time I came in.
<DebA> how long have you been with j4f?
<poips> I've been here probably about two years
<DebA> do you hang out in any other places to chat?
<poips> Spend most of my time playing games and in icq
<DebA> does mom ever get online?
<poips> NOOOO. she won't come near the puter. hahaha.
<poips> My computer room is Off Limits--not because of me but because of her.
<poips> She says she's a computer widow <poips> She's the greatest but thinks computers are too advanced for her
<DebA> somehow I doubt that...she was smart enough to marry you....sounds like a smart lady to me
<poips> she is a smart lady--was V.P. of a bank when she retired
<DebA> of all the things that you have seen or done in your life, what would you consider to be the most influential?
<poips> WHOA-----gotta think about that.
<poips> Probably the war years
<DebA> in what way?
<poips> Also the way my parents raised me
<poips> Experiences I'd never dreamed of and all the memories now
<DebA> were you in the military ?
<DebA> how long were you in the service and what branch?
<poips> USARCARIB (Army) five years and CAIRC (AirForce) 5 years
<poips> Our zone was Central and South America. Living in Panama was great. I loved the country and the people
<poips> CZ was Canal Zone which no longer exists. It's all Panama now <poips> my daughter was born in a place that isn't. hahahaha
<DebA> any outstanding achievements for you or mom?
<poips> nah, just an average life--was just going to say, MY FAMILY
<poips> I got the Mr. Shrubber Award for 1998 - Just4Fun!!!!!!!
<DebA> sounds like you had the "American Dream" pops
<poips> I've made some wonderful friends on the net. Did I tell you that one friend from New Zealand visited us last year and is coming back again this year. Another couple from Germany have visited us twice
<DebA> how long have you been chatting with them? <poips> Probably a couple of years. They knew my daughter first
<DebA> do you have any pet peeves?
<poips> YES: Young punks that are trying to be tough and use dirty language
Pops shared many other things with me, but if you want to know what they were, you'll have to drop into #Just4Fun and find out from him. You may want to know that all the ladies in J4F fight over Pops....there's a stiff competition for his lap. Speaking of which.... DebA distracts carol^ by tossing a bag of M&Ms to her, tosses a blanket over puff^s head so she can't see Pops is in the channel, trips Juju^, tells debo^ that Elvis is sitting right next to her and runs like crazy to be the first in Pops lap!!!!!!!! You can also find out about Pops and other #Just4Fun regulars at the web site:
POPS, thank you very much for this interview. ((((((((love ya POPS!!!)))))))))
If anyone would like me to interview someone they know or would be willing to have me do an article on their channel, please contact me via email I_wonder_why@hotmail.com DebA

#NORWICH
#Norwich was originally opened as a help channel for the users of Chenango Net Services located in Norwich, NY. CNS had several sub nets, one of which was norwich.net. There was a core group of users from literally around the world looking for a new place to chat, rather than a channel most belonged to at the time on a different net. We began to meet on #Norwich. CNS support was no longr using the channel and Busterc was listed as the owner, so our group then turned #Norwich to our new home. Soon we were meeting there daily, rather than on our old channel.
We decided to try a new concept. We elected to run the channel by committee and let the users make their own rules. The committee was Buster, gyrene, lois, OldMan, and willco. That concept has served the channel well and the committe remains today as it was then, with the exception of OldMan. Sharkie now fills his chair. We held meetings where the users told us how they would like to see a channel run, what to allow and what not to allow.

There had also always been a #Norwich on Starlink-IRC as well. We grew tired of all the sewer garbage on the other net, dropped #Norwich there and moved our gathering to #Norwich Starlink-IRC a little over a year ago. Some of you may recall our first birthday bash held in #Townhall.
We have a few youngers members, but most of the #Norwich members are 50 plus. We enjoy sharing lively mature conversation, sharing .wav and midi files, without a lot of line flooding. The door is always open. Our general to[ic tends to vary from the main stream. Drop in and visit! Outside of enjoying yourself, we only have a couple of policies. The language is kept to a general day to day content. We are not prudes by any means, but donot permit "gutter talk" on the channel. We also don't discuss the two big inflammatory subjects of Politics and Religion on open channel. If you wish to discuss those topics, please do so in private chat. Our door is always open!
- Busterc, owner of #Norwich
WHO'S DOING WHAT?
by lois and amazing

Maran of #40nHolding became a very proud grandma on Feb 19th to Joel Christopher, weighing in at 7 lbs 1 oz. Congrats, Maran!!

A Bithday Bash was held in #Townhall for NOLady and g-force and was attended by many of their friends. Unfortunatly the birthday people almost didnt attend. NOLady was a "bit" late in arriving due to a prior engagement, and g-force was away on holidays in Las Vegas, but nevertheless a GREAT time was held by all!

A Birthday Brunch was held for ClassyF in #townhall on Sunday, Mar 14th. Many friends arrived to sample the brekky buffet and we found out that ClassyF LOVES garlic with her eggs. Must be Italian. hehehe

February was also the time for a Birthday Party for our Amazing SLIRC Staff member on February 22nd. She showed up for her party, and #townhall walls were bursting with revellers crowding in to give their good wishes!

#Norwich's two young Danes, rygter and mukke, left on a holiday in Ireland March 5 - 22 with their school class, their trip to coincide with St. Patrick's Day. They were looking forward to the dancing in the streets in Dublin. (And perhaps a bit of green beer?)

FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnid

We're being invaded by people from dalnet !!!!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEK. Lock the doors .. there are billions of them !!! Ok. Five maybe. They SEEM nice enough, but they really like #TownHall ... and the rest of the net, so you never know... they even like the spider's channel.

The blue one has also noticed people hanging out in #TownHall on sunday morning for the free brunch buffet. Some people will do anything for free food. Or snax.

And speaking of warped priorities, this reporter has learned that one of OUR admins (who, alas, I am "force"d to keep anonymous) had a choice between going to Las Vegas with a companion for his birthday or hanging out on the net. This person of misplaced priorities actually WENT to VEGAS instead of hanging out HERE.!!! Yes. one more for the unbelievable but true file.

The intrepid spider was at Lois' birthday party .(held here on the net, I might add!) .. but, wow, talk about long winded acceptance speeches... Some people you give em a soapbox and they just go on and on and on and on and ..well ...its just sad. The text of the speech is (in full): SPEECH: Thank yawl and I promise not to have another 80th! END OF SPEECH yak yak yak yak yak yak (Editor's Note: Lois is misquoted - she never has said "yak yak etc")

A certain treeperson was observed munching away on something called an instant pot roast.. which at 20 minutes isn't real instant. Prolly wasn't even a pot roast, just a batch of polathingies all nailed together. Sometimes you just have to wonder about the maple leaf set here .. ya really do.

One of our intrepid canadians made their way to Raincouver for a visit this week ... I suppose he went by footbus to the busbus to the planebus and then by boatbus to the dirtbus and on to wherever he's staying. They have a lot of buses there. Apparently no airplanes, ferries, or trains .. just a lot of buses. (This reporter suspects its just the mold from the rain plugging up the brain cells, but I could be wrong.)

Until next issue .. -30-

PS Unpaid advertisement: A certain grammydragon is soliciting again. Hmm. Oh. I mean soliciting a flannel teddy to fit a dragon. Anyone having knowledge of the whereabouts of such an item of apparel REALLY NEEDS TO GET A LIFE. Uh. I mean, should let the dragon know where it is, costs of shipping (and I do mean SHIPping) and handling (of the teddy, handling the dragon is prolly a LOT extra).

The posts that spam, the speech that's free!
Beware the Netscape cache, and shun
The AOL mail id!''

Long time a higher bandwidth sought --
And wished had he for his old PC
A faster modem bought.
And, as that wistful thought he gripped,
The Internet, with bait of flame,
Ran applets through the Javascript,
And mailbombed as it came!
The war he waged! As on each page
The HP mouse he double-clicked!
And 'twas absurd, the hype he'd heard
'Bout sites that he had picked.
``And, hast thou surfed the Internet?
Come link my page, my newbie bud!
O Lycos night! Yahoo! Excite!''
