September
August 24 - September 22 Virgo the Virgin
You have a sharp intellectual mind which delights in all things analytical or poetic. A perfectionist at heart, you demand no less of those around you and are careful in choosing friends. You have an artistic streak which manifests itself in your originality and your interest in physical order. Although curiosity may cause you to flit from one thing to another early in life, eventually you will settle into your place and dedicate your time to a single field. Virgos make excellent doctors, accountants, analysts, and teachers, but their hard work and iniative allows them to succeed in any area. Their youth may be characterized by chaos, but they will find comfort and stability as they move forward through life and begin to design a path or direction.
Congrats to scorp and her other half on the birth of their grandson on Aug. 13th! Gaige Michael Joseph weighed in at 7lbs 13oz. Parents, baby AND grandparents are ALL doing well :) Special thanks to Puriel for the wonderful Ghostrider Challenge Show she put on in #Townhall on July 29th. There was over 60 users who joined to enjoy and they had a great time! Reminders: There are times when glines are set and some innocent users might get caught in them. If this does happen and you know of anyone who was caught in one then they can send an email to abuse@starlink-irc.org That address is also on http://www.starlink-irc.org/serverlist.html There is also some other information on that page so check it out when you have some time. For those of you who run ZoneAlarm and are on a cable or dsl connection, you might be noticing a very large amount of alerts. There is no need for you to be alarmed about them. It is the codered worm looking for NT or win2000 systems that are running a IIS webserver. For more information on codered, or any other viruses, worms or trojans go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ Don't shut your ZoneAlarm off cause of the alerts. Better to get the alerts than for your computer to be vulnerable.
Reminder: As some of you might know, there are other nets out there with the word 'starlink' in them. When telling your friends about what net you chat on -- PLEASE make sure you say StarLink-IRC.Org. And don't forget There is a 'quicklist' of servers at http://www.starlink-irc.org/serverlist.html

Same conversations where you understand all the words but none of the sentences... that kind of thing. Once again, the Wurltzer committe should be advised that I am prepared to receive my award at any time. (hmm.. wurlitzer? that doesnt seem right .. ) Soon-To-Be-Prizewinner Itsy Itsy
IF CREDIT CARDS LOST OR STOLEN Thought this might be something for all to know. I am not sure what Canada has for credit reporting agencies but they could add it to this as well as their equivalent of Social Security. Contributed by Eleanor aka ellie of #Scorp's-Place and #Itsy Subject: WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOSE YOUR WALLET OR PURSE We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed using your name, address, SS#, credit, etc. Unfortunately the author of this piece has firsthand knowledge, because my wallet was stolen last month and within a week the thieve(s) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information on-line, and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know. As everyone always advises, cancel your credit cards immediately, but the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know who to call. Keep those where you can find them easily (having to hunt for them is additional stress you WON'T need at that! point!). File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen, this proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important I never ever thought to do this. Call the three national credit-reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit. By the time I was advised to do this - almost 2 weeks after the theft all the damage had been done! (there are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert). Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them in their tracks. The numbers are:

THE JOYS OF WOMANHOOD Contributed by Zingo (Brilliant woman author unknown) Women over 50 don't have babies because they would put them down and forget where they left them. One of life's mysteries is how a 2 lb. Box of candy can make a woman gain 5 lbs. My mind not only wanders it sometimes leaves completely. The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes. The best thing about living in a small town is that when you don't know what you are doing, someone else does. The older you get, the harder it is to lose weight, because by that time, your and your fat are really good friends. Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today! Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness. I gave up jogging for my health, when my thighs started rubbing together and set my panty hose on fire. Amazing! You hang something in your closet for awhile and it shrinks two sizes! Skinny people irritate me! They say things like, “You know, sometimes I just forget to eat!” Now, I've forgotten my address, my mother's maiden name and my keys, but I have never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat! A friend of mine confused her valium with her birth control pills. Now she has 14 kids, but she doesn't really care. The trouble with some women is they get all excited about nothing, and then they marry him. I read this article that said the typical symptoms for stress are: Driving too fast, impulse buying, and eating too much. Are they kidding? That's my idea of a perfect day! I know what Victoria's Secret is! The secret is that no one over 30 can fit into their things
Contributed by Itsy's Dad The U.S. standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That is an exceptionally odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and the U.S. railroads were built by English expatriates. Why did the English build them that way? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used. Why did "they" use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing. So why did the wagons have that particular odd spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? The first long distance roads in Europe (and England) were built by Imperial Rome for their legions. The roads have been used ever since. And the ruts in the roads? The ruts in the roads, which everyone had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels, were first formed by Roman war chariots. Since the chariots were made for (or by) Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. The U.S. standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the original specification for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Specifications and bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification and wonder what horse's ass came up with it, you may be exactly right, because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the back end of two war horses. Thus we have the answer to the original question. Now the twist to the story....... When we see a space shuttle sitting on it's launching pad, there are two booster rockets attached to the side of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRB's. The SRB's are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRB's might have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRB's had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory had to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So, the major design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass!!! Don't you just love engineering?
