Libra the Scales

    • Planet: Venus
    • Birthstone for October Opal
    • Notables: Bela Lugosi, Emily Post, Eleanor Roosevelt, Barbara Walters

The only sign of the zodiac what does not represent a living thing.

The sign is a balance of scales. Hence, their behavior. They view everything in terms of pros and cons. They are great believers in lists and love large menus. Libras submit jokes where the set-up is equal to the punchline; most Libras therefore can't stand puns or one-liners.

I am the "American Eagle" and I shed a tear with you today.
My wing has been wounded, and my flight of freedom taken away!
Give me time to repair my wing, dry my tears and heal some more.
    But make no mistake
I, the American Eagle, will again fly high and soar!

#WEEK-IN-REVIEW
IRC is a truly global community with people from all over the world. It seems to us in #Week_In_Review that this is the perfect forum for people to share their points of view so that we can all learn from each other. Hopefully, it will help us to understand each other better and make this world a more peacful and tolerant place. With this in mind, #Week_In_Review was set up as a place for people gather once a week to share and dscuss our thoughts and concerns on events and issues that confront the world today.
We opened our doors on Sunday, 23rd September at 7am EST
We would like to reinterate that this is a discussion forum and that the highest degree of tolerance and respect for views other than our own will be expected. It is not a platform for attacks against any nationality, religion, creed or philosophy.
We look forward to seeing as many of you there who would like to share with us your thoughts and views.

#OldRadio
OTR chat welcomes anyone with an interest in the radio programs in the “golden days” of radio…through the 1940's and 50's. Recently members have been talking about what their epitaphs might be, taken from the radio shows of those times. Some suggestions were: “Due to circumstances beyond my control” chosen by Harry Bartell, one of the busiest radio actors in Hollywood during that time. Harry probably has more radio shows credited to him than any other Hollywood actor, and those include Suspense, Gunsmoke, Sherlock Holmes, Nero Wolfe and many others. Harry's nick is Harverly on the #OldRadio channel. “What a revolting development this is!” was a line suggested, from the Life Of Riley show, with Riley played by William Bendix. Another suggestion, for someone who had lived an exemplary life…was “Up, up and away!” from the Superman show.
#OldRadio meets every Thursday evenings 8 PM Eastern. You are invited to join.

#50&FANTASTIC
September 11, 2001 was to our channel like it was to so many others -- a day none of us ever thought we would see, and a day we hope we never see again. Thoughts and prayers from every channel member go out to the victims; survivors; their families and friends; and as well to each and every person, no matter where you are on the globe. Being able to get on the computer and share in the frustration and fear with others is a part of what makes channel chat so great. It is a blessing that we have so many friends who care so much about others.
This day of terrorism was felt in the United States, but it also was felt worldwide. While none of us know what tomorrow will bring, we can be thankful we have each other to lean on, share with, and talk to. 50&Fantastic is trying to resume some sort of normalcy but it is difficult. Talk of the happenings world-wide somehow finds its way into each night's conversations. And, that's a good thing. As we go forth with our daily lives - each of us will always remember and feel a sadness in our heart and a fear in our minds. If you need a friend to talk with or a place to enjoy and have some fun -- please join with us.
Let's hope a time of healing and not hatred is upon us. Those who are responsible will face a justice and retaliation. Let's be kind to those who were in no way connected and are just the innocents. It is said over and over again -- but it's never too much -- God Bless America! She still stands!

FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnidspider

Due to the late unpleasantness of the 11th, this month's Follies will be a little different.

There have been many good thoughts and deeds as the world comes to terms with the threat of those who care nothing for lives they do not know. I would like to take the opportunity to use my little corner of the web for a few thoughts on the events at hand.

First of all, the times to come will be neither as grim as the TV mavens or doomsayers would have us believe (after all, they do have to sell air time) .. nor will they be as bright as the politicians would have us believe (again, they have to get elected so they, too, have an agenda). Predictions on the outcome of adversity are notoriously inaccurate .. just about 100 percent of the time.

Let's all appreciate the differences that we all share, along with the similarities. I have lived in most areas of the USA as well as parts of Asia for short times and there is one simple truth (no matter what people want you to believe) -- people are people everywhere. Walk down the main drag and the little shops in a small town .. whether it is in California, Manitoba, North Dakota, western Massachusetts, Tidewater Virginia, or southern Japan .. and you will see.

"Real" people are the same everywhere.. they all value the same things .. friends, family, country.. and in the same way... they just talk and dress funny. (This applies to the guy who fixes my air conditioner too .. and he's from West Virginia, so its not necessarily an international thing!)

There is, however, true evil in the world.... those who don't have such values and deal only in threats, death and destruction. There probably always will be.

>From time to time their behavior becomes an affront to human dignity and they are dealt with. The United States of America has been awakened to deal once again with those who use terror and destruction to impose their will on the world. We have done it before and we will do it again.

There are a couple of things that the world tends to forget about Americans. Which isn't unusual, every once in a while we forget it about ourselves.

One thing is that there is right. And there is wrong. We know the difference. We like to be left alone so they can meddle. We tend to be lazy when given the chance and have some of the damndest internal squabbles you ever did see!

On the other hand... We really do object to global despotism. And we eventually get around to getting rid of it. Ask the German Nazis or the Soviet Communists. Ask Saddam. And whether the job is easy. Or it's hard. We will get it done. Not because of a higher calling .. or for glory... Not for power (last time we owned the world we gave it back .. jury is still out on that one but hey..)

We do it not for anything but the silly reason is that it has to BE done. And theres nobody else who even stands a chance of pulling it off. Not the first time we've been here. Probably not the last.

But we have to do this. If you know an American, you know we don't really have a choice. We get the idea that we have to help people and fix things and once its in our heads, its REALLY hard to get out.

But we have to.

"All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"

    BLOCKING THOSE ANNOYING PRIVATE MESSAGES

If you're being annoyed by people who send your queries (commonly called PM's or Private Messages) you can "block" them for the current connect session by typing the following:

    /raw silence *!user@host

This can be "wilcarded" as well - for instance, if you wanted to prevent anyone with an AOL account from querying you, you could type this:

    /raw silence *!*@*.aol.com

This method has the advantage of working with ANY client, including the Java clients we have on SLIRC.

To REMOVE a silence, you can either disconnect from irc (which erases the silences for your session), or, preface the command with a - key, such as, this would REMOVE the abovementioned silence of all AOL people:

    /raw silence -*!*@*.aol.com

If you have any questions, feel free to drop by #channels and ask.

    Life Beyond Fifty

    • Maybe it's true that life begins at fifty. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out.
    • There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.
    • You're getting old when you don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along.
    • Middle age is when work is a lot less fun and fun a lot more work.
    • Statistics show that at the age of seventy, there are five women to every man. Isn't that the darndest time for a guy to get those odds?
    • Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than to get tired.
    • By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.
    • Middle age is when you have stoped growing at both ends, and have begun to grow in themiddle.
    • Of course I'm against sin; I'm against anything that I'm too old to enjoy.
    • Billy Graham has described heaven as a family reunion that never ends. What must hell possibly be like? Home videos of the same reunion?
    • A man has reached middle age when he is cautioned to slow down by his doctor instead of the police.
    • Middle age is having a choice of two tempations and choosing the one that will get you home earlier.
    • You know you're into middle age when you realize that caution is the only thing you cre to exercise.
    • At my age, “getting a little action” means I don't need to take a laxative.
    • Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As You grow older, it will avoid you.
    • The aging process could be slowed down if it had to work its way through Congress.
    • You're getting old when getting lucky means you find your car in the parking lot.
    • You're getting old when you're sitting in a rocker and you can't get it started.
    • You're getting old when your wife gives up sex for Lent, and you don't know it wil the 4th of July.
    • You're getting old when you wake up with that morning-after feeling, and you didn't do anything the night before.
    • It's hard to be nostalgic when you can't remember anything.
    • You know you're getting old when you stop buying green bananas.
    • Last Will and Testament: Being of sound mind, I spent all my money.

    On the other hand……

    BENEFITS OF GROWING OLDER
    From Itsy's Dad
    • Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
    • In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.
    • It's harder and harder for sexual harassment charges to stick.
    • No one expects you to run into a burning building.
    • People call at 9 p.m. and ask, "Did I wake you?"
    • People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
    • There's nothing left to learn the hard way.
    • Things you buy now won't wear out.
    • You can eat dinner at 4:00 p.m.
    • You can live without sex but not without glasses.
    • You enjoy hearing about other people's operations.
    • You get into a heated argument about pension plans.
    • You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.
    • You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
    • You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.
    • You sing along with the elevator music.
    • Your eyes won't get much worse.
    • Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
    • Your joints are more accurate than the National Weather Service.
    • Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.
    • Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.
    • People send you this list.
