#40-up
ello there fellow chatters :) I'd like to say that #40-up continues to be a friendly channel  thanks to the support of Starlink-IRC and our fellow roomies. The welcome mat is always out for any that would care to join us for  hassle-free chat .
Sometimes we even have educational chat ..it's amazing where people's minds go when they stop staring at the shiney object in the corner. We leave that there for those that need to chill down, also a colouring book in the corner with crayons...altho the red crayon needs to be replaced..someone keeps using that as lipstick before they hand out Birthday smooches.
Don't forget that the channel is #40-up ..  the same as cooking with spices.. a little dash makes a world of difference :))
see ya round the ridges

#Bluesville
HI I am T (short for Teresa) and the proud "owner" of the all new Bluesville room.  Our main purpose will be to discuss blues music and musicians but we are also planning some fun and informative things too.  Me & my co-conspirators are already hard at work soliciting blues artists and people involved in the blues scene in general to come do "exclusive" chats with us from time to time. Also in the works are "blues parties" which will be focused on a particular artist or cd.We will distribute music to those interested "tree style"(and with the artists consent when applicable). Also...we already have an egroup over in yahoogroups bearing the name Bluesville which is home to Junior Jackson's "Today in Blues";as the name implies it is a listing of things blues related every day (births..deaths ..song releases etc).Junior's column is featured on message boards worldwide and is a must read for all bluesfans.I would love to see some of you on the egroup as well as n the chatroom :-)
As things progress I will post here for all to see and whenever we have a big event you are ALL invited!!!
Take care & remember....it's always a good day for the blues :-)
yours truly....T

WHO'S DOING WHAT

CONGRATULATIONS to GRANDPA Chiefy and his whole family!!  His first grandchild was born to his son, Tommy, on August 20, 2003.  Her name is Alexandra Paige and she's a little beauty!  (I suspect if you ask, he'll whip out his cyber wallet and show off her photos!)

Chattie and Palidin are safely in their new home and will hopefully be back online for the next edition of the newsletter.  As soon as they return, be certain to visit their channels, #30+Fun and #Trivia-Chat (which is trivia with an interesting, fun twist).  This co-editor will be VERY glad to have our editor back!!

FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnidspider
Well, it is going to be hard for your glorious blue orb to come up with anything funnier than the current california election .... although, if theres time maybe I'll run for governor.  They cant do much worse than what they have now even if I run on the hot dog ticket.

Unless its andrew who has this odd addiction to 'Canadian' mars bars.  Hmm. 'Canadian' ??  Wonder if homeland security should be looking into the candy bar gap.  ( It occurs that here one could digress into a LONG discussion totally unfit for a fambly network so we wont.)

On the puter side, your intrepid arachnid bought a color printer.  They use a lot of ink on 'best'.  Today's hint: don't practice printing with the new toy on 'best' quality on big sheets of paper unless you got a spare cartridge or two.  They should warn about that somewhere. Other than the instructions anyway .. who reads instructions???

Til next month....

TIP OF THE MONTH

Thanks to HighWayMan for submitting this helpful piece which may very well help to keep our ladies safe:

Tips on Staying Safe

Please take the time to read this.  I know you are smart enough to know these pointers, but there will be some, where you will go "Hmm. I must remember that!" After reading, forward it to someone you care about... never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2.  Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans: If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT  HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you..... Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. THEN RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3.  If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4.  Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS! A predator may be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOOR AND LEAVE.
5.  A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot or parking garage:
    a) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger-side floor, and in the back seat.
    b) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
    c) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6.  ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.  (Stairwells are a perfect crime spot).
7.  If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you, (a running target), 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN! (I question this one Mick)
8.  As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

A POEM FOR COMPUTER USERS OVER 50
contributed by Scorp
A Computer was something on TV
From a science fiction show of note
A Window was something you hated to clean
And a Ram was the father of a goat.

Meg was the name of a girlfriend
And Gig was a job for the nights
Now they all mean different things
And that really Mega Bytes.

An Application was for employment
A Program was a TV show
A Cursor used profanity
A Keyboard was a piano.

A Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3-inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out.

Compress was something you did to the garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you Unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for a while.

Log On was adding wood to the fire
Hard Drive was a long trip on the road
A Mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a Backup happened to your commode.

Cut you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A Web was a spider's home
And a Virus was the flu.

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the Memory in my head.
I hear nobody's been killed in a Computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead.'

For all parents:

To My Child
Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and laugh when I feel like crying.

Just for this morning, I will let you choose what you want to wear, and smile and say how perfect it is.

Just for this morning, I am going to step over the laundry, and pick you up and then take you to the park to play.

Just for this morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink, and let you
teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together.

Just for this afternoon, I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off, and sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles.

Just for this afternoon, I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and whine for the ice-cream truck, and I will buy you one if he comes by.

Just for this afternoon, I won't worry about what you are going to be when you grow up, or second guess every decision I have made where you are concerned.

Just for this afternoon, I will let you help me bake cookies, and I won't stand over you trying to fix them.

Just for this afternoon, I will take us to McDonald's and buy us both a
Happy Meal so you can have both toys.

Just for this evening, I will hold you in my arms and tell you a story about how you were born and how much I love you.

Just for this evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get angry.

Just for this evening, I will let you stay up late while we sit on the porch and count all the stars.

Just for this evening, I will snuggle beside you for hours, and miss my
favorite TV shows.
Just for this evening, when I run my finger through your hair as you pray.  I will simply be grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given.  I will think about the mothers and fathers who are searching for their missing children, the mothers and fathers who are visiting their children's graves instead of their bedrooms, and mothers and fathers who are in hospital rooms watching their children suffer shamelessly, and screaming inside that they can't handle it anymore.
And when I kiss you good night I will hold you a little tighter, a little longer.

It is then that I will thank God for you, and ask him for nothing....
except one more day...

Poem from an old lady

When an old lady died in the geriatric ward of a small hospital near Dundee, Scotland, it was felt that she had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through her meager possessions, they found this poem.

An Old Lady's Poem
What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
What are you thinking when you're looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try!"
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.....
Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill....
Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse; you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten ...with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters, who love one another.
A young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet,
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon at twenty -- my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.
At twenty-five now, I have young of my own,
Who need me to guide and a secure happy home.
A woman of thirty, my young now grown fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last.
At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,
But my man's beside me to see I don't mourn.
At fifty once more, babies play round my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead;
I look at the future, I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing young of their own,
And I think of the years and the love that I've known.

I'm now an old woman ...and nature is cruel;
'Tis jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
And I'm loving and living life over again.
I think of the years ....all too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.

So open your eyes, nurses, open and see,
Not a crabby old woman; look closer ...see ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an old person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within . . .
We will one day be  there, too!

Ever notice, the older we get, the more we're like computers?
We start out with lots of "Memory" and "Drive",
then we become outdated, "Crash" at odd moments,
and eventually have to get our parts replaced.

    Have a Happy Birthday ! !
