FROM THE EDITOR
Please feel free to send in things you'd like to share with our community of chatters.

It's so good to be back with you again.  September was a very difficult month for an awful lot of people.  Our little cyber community has suffered so many losses.  We've had to bid farewell to too many friends recently.  The hardships facing of those of us who have endured the disasters of Katrina and Rita (and facing those who have worked so hard to help in the relief efforts) have threatened to crush our already overburdened hearts and overstressed minds.

Please keep in mind that we did not publish a newsletter in September, so some of the columns and some of the news in this issue are carry-overs from last month.

Deepest sympathies to the folks in #Mommas^House, who lost Elkabong, to the folks in #allnewschat, who lost Fshager, and to #50+Chat_Trivia, who lost Grippy.  Our hearts go out to you and the families of these StarLink-IRC chatters.  They will be missed.  For more information, see Channel Chatter for these channels.

Our family has been so overwhelmed and humbled by the goodness of others during these trying times.  Within the most troubled and frightening times of our lives, God sends to us family, friends, and (as is so very often the case on StarLink-IRC) friends who are more family than our own blood kin.  Throughout the catastrophic destruction of Katrina and mammoth challenges that followed, our StarLink-IRC family has watched over us and loved us so well. You have given to us your tireless attention, your unbelievable generosity, and your never-ending friendship.  There are no words to express how grateful we are for each of you and for all you've done for us.  God bless you as only He can do.   (See note from gngrbrd below, please.)

Thank you to all of those who were able to attend or to send comments for the memorial service for treecat held in #Townhall.  If you would like to view the log of the memorial service or to see some of the other tributes honoring the memory of our dear friend, you may do so here:

Special Note from gngrbrd

Dear SLIRC Family,

As you all know, it's been a rough couple of weeks on the Gulf coast.  With my job keeping me away from home for extended periods of time, it was even rougher.  The kindness and friendship I found on SLIRC during this time was even more special than what I have grown accustomed to since making this network my home.  With phone service spotty at best, it was my SLIRC family who kept dialing numbers for me until they got through.  These same people kept my spirits up and strengthened me with prayer.  I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have friends like you on this great network.

To the folks who were so generous after the storms, I cannot thank you enough.  Your gifts did as much good in lifting spirits as they did in helping replenish the things that were lost.  I have heard it said so many times that you are just computer names and not "real people."  I challenge anyone to say that to me, especially now after all the blessings these "computer names" have bestowed upon my family.  I pray that no one has to go through something like this, but if you ever do, you can rest secure in the knowledge that people will be there for you with whatever you need, whenever you need it.

Thank you all.
Peace be on you,
gngrbrd

Thank you all so much for sharing in the wonderful memorial service that was held for treecat on Sunday Sept. 24th. She has been and will continue to be dearly missed. Here is a poem that she read at her mother's memorial service and I think it's very fitting for treecat as well.

 Miss Me....But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room ...
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low;
Remember the love that we once shared ...
Miss me - but let me go!

For this is a journey we must all take,
And each must go along;
It's all part of the "Master's" plan ...
A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds ...
Miss me - but let me go.

Thanks to marmi and excited for this one!

The Turkey shot out of the oven
and rocketed into the air
it knocked every plate off the table
and partly demolished a chair.

It ricocheted into a corner
and burst with a deafening boom
then splattered all over the kitchen
completely obscuring the room.

It stuck to the walls and the windows
it totally coated the floor
there was turkey attached to the ceiling
where there'd never been turkey before.

It blanketed every appliance
it smeared every saucer and bowl
there wasn't a way I could stop it
that turkey was out of control.

I scraped and I scrubbed with displeasure
and thought with chagrin as I mopped
that I'd never again stuff a turkey
with popcorn that hadn't been popped.

We are off to Yuma AZ on Sun the 23rd.  Six of us went to dinner last week and when the waitress found out that we were celebrating leaving the rainy part of the country for the sunshine she whipped out this poem in just a few minutes.  Needless to say she received a hefty tip. lol lol.  She is a very talented lady.  Poem is as follows:

ARIZONA
To Pat & Gil Oct 17, 2005

Arizona is our sunshine,
it brightens all our days
It tips the peaks of our life with light
and drives the clouds away

Arizona is just like music,
it lingers in our heart
and where its melody is heard,
the ills of life depart.

Happy thoughts come crowding
all those joyful notes to greet,
because Arizona is our sunshine
for making our life so sweet.

Bon Voyage

We received a phone call from Joy, the dear wife of Greg (aka ElKabong). Greg passed away early this morning, most likely in his sleep. The cause of death is not known at this time, however Joy will contact me as the information comes available.  I can not write any more about my dear long-distance friend at this time as my heart is breaking and my tears are flowing. I WILL be collecting monies from any chatter who wishes to donate towards flowers. And I will post information as to funeral services as they came available.

THE LAST TRUE STORY I'LL EVER TELL
An Accidental Soldier's Account of the War in Iraq
By John Crawford
EAN: 9781573223140 ISBN: 157322314X
219pp August 4, 2005
Publisher: Riverhead Hardcover $23.95

The war in Iraq may undoubtedly be the most documented war in history to date. Blogging and instant picture-sending have made it a war that we live in. Soldiers can call home during the war. They can leave messages during the war. They can check their email during the war.  War has changed.

John Crawford joined the National Guard to earn money for college, not to go fight a war. Two credits away from graduating, he was newly married and suddenly dropped into a controversial and increasingly unpopular-at-home war. Having spent three years in the active 101st Airborne Division, he enlisted in the Florida National Guard as he entered college, primarily to pay his tuition. Then his unit was activated. An anticipated 3 to 6 month tour of duty turned into more than a year abroad.

Reading goes smoothly through his experiences in Iraq. A blinding sandstorm, 130F degree heat, mud and rain; rumors about going home; time in Iraq extended twice; being sardined into filthy, smelly, hot sleeping areas with comrades; less-than-adequate body armor; broken-down vehicles; realizing he was at the Tigris River, the "mother of civilization," where many others had fought wars; and the usual dislike of rear-echelon, commendation-seeking officers, all flow together with remarkable clarity. He describes ten-foot high trash piles, clogged drains and sewers, soldiers who looted, incompetent National Guard officers, ridiculous paperwork, being assigned police work to prevent locals from stealing gasoline, never knowing if someone would pull a gun and shoot at him and his unit; he describes the distrust and dislike between Iraqi and American military leaders and ponders the lack of electricity, fresh water and food a year after the invasion.

During his time at the war, he phoned home at night and had access to the internet. The only way to get replacement uniforms, he observed, was to order them online and pay for them yourself. Replacement parts for military vehicles came from scavenging through landfills for spare parts. Crawford insists that through all this, he and his unit were good soldiers who intended to do their duty no matter what, even while feeling like the poor stepchild whom nobody cared about.

Descriptions of  some of our own soldiers' boredom, fear, physical discomfort and consequent indifference, contempt and petty brutality towards the Iraqis is clearly documented in what started out as a series of essays about Crawford's experiences in Iraq. He is home now, writing and completing his college degree. He believes he is psychologically damaged and changed forever and has no affiliation with the U.S. Army. His book will probably be made into a movie - it almost has to be - it has all the earmarks of a money maker and it will probably be out before the war is ended.

Lorellei

"These are frightening times we live in and this book reinforces that. It will also open the eyes of those who have not yet "seen" what real war is all about.  I think we owe Crawford a debt of gratitude for sharing his true reality with us. I cannot believe anyone will read this book without coming away sadder, more informed and with a more realistic mental picture of this war". ...Lorellei

PETS AND PESTS         Critters   by Momma
If you have questions, interesting facts or suggestions, other notable news concerning pets and pests, please submit them to the newsletter with Pets and Pests in the subject line

It is that time of year when we hear of more pets getting sprayed by a skunk. Recently a friend of mine did some research to help solve the problem of a beloved dog whose odor was unbearable after such an encounter. Thank you VI for sending this to me!

Tomato juice or vinegar is not recommended because it only masks the odor--it doesn't remove the smell.
Usually dogs take a hit in the neck area. Typically they are sprayed while provoking the skunk and turn their head, while being sprayed, in order to avoid it.

First check to see if your dog was injured by the skunk. If your dog is bleeding or appears to have been bitten, consult a vet immediately. Skunks may carry rabies. If vaccinated, your dog is safe from the rabies virus (but you are not!).

Next go to a drug store and get the following, if needed:

1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).
1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of Liquid Soap
1 pair of plastic or latex gloves

Bathe the dog outside or, if it's too dark or cold, in the bathroom with the door closed and window opened.
Combine the ingredients in an open container (do not store in a sealed bottle--it will explode).
Using gloves, wash your dog with lukewarm water and the mixture while the mixture is bubbling. Work the mixture well into the fur.
Be sure to concentrate on the area that was sprayed.
Keep mixture away from your dog's face and eyes (it's a harsh solution). (If your dog has been sprayed in the face, try Tricotine Liquid Douche Concentrate or any over-the-counter douche.)

Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes or so before rinsing off. Rinse the dog with lukewarm tap water. Don't wash the mixture into your dog's eyes (use a washcloth to cover the eyes if you're rinsing the head). After bathing, check your dog's eyes. If they are red and watering, your dog may have taken a direct hit in the face. Skunk spray won't blind the dog, but it's very painful. Contact a vet.

foo! FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information
...brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnid

Here we are nearly at halloween land and our clueless staff are playing hide and seek already ...
On the weekend, an unnamed scorp came to visit another staff person and handed over a cd in a really nice case with names of all the stuff on it and all that.
Of course the unnamed amazing staff person didn't OPEN the case for a few days ...But a couple days later, it was opened and.. tada.. no cd in the case!  (Saw that part coming, did you?)

Upon investigation, the scorp person looked and, yes, safely sitting inside the drive tray was the CD..  ready to go.

Somehow I get the feeling that these two are NOT exactly going to be a major threat to cd piracy any time soon. And yes, you can come and see these critters in StarLink-IRC in their native environment.  Don't bang on the glass or make loud noises.. they're probably sleeping.

Laughter is Good Medicine
Thanks to Scotty of #Squires_Pub for this one!

On Rosh Hashanah, there's a ceremony called Tashlich. Jews traditionally go to a body of water such as the ocean, a stream or a river to pray and throw in breadcrumbs.  This symbolizes throwing away one's sins which the fish devour. Occasionally, people ask what kinds of breadcrumbs should be thrown.  Here are Dr. Morris Fishbein's suggestions for breads most appropriate for specific sins and misbehaviors:
  • For ordinary sins - White Bread
  • For erotic sins - French Bread
  • For particularly dark sins - Pumpernickel
  • For complex sins - Multi grain
  • For sins of indecision - Waffles
  • For sins of chutzpah - Any fresh bread
  • For substance abuse - Stoned wheat
  • For committing auto theft - Caraway
  • For timidity/cowardice - Milk toast
  • For ill-temperedness - Sourdough
  • For eccentricity - Nut bread
  • For excessive irony - Rye bread
  • For unnecessary chances - Hero bread
  • For war-mongering - Kaiser rolls
  • For dressing immodestly - Tarts
  • For lechery and promiscuity - Hot buns
  • For promiscuity with gentiles - Hot cross buns
  • For racist attitudes - Crackers
  • For being holier than thou - Bagels
  • For overeating - Stuffing
  • For indecent photography - Cheesecake
  • For raising your voice - Challah
  • For pride and egotism - Puff pastry
  • For ass-kissing - Brownies
  • For being overly smothering - Angel food cake
  • For trashing the environment - Dumplings
  • For telling bad jokes - Corn bread

Short Final...
Overheard during fleet week practice over the San Francisco Bay;

Nor Cal Approach: Bonanza 1234, opposite direction traffic at your 1 o'clock, five miles, five hundred feet above you, Blue Angels flight of two.

Bonanza 1234: Negative contact, say again type traffic.

Nor Cal: Two F-18s, blue and yellow. Currently at your one moving to two o'clock ... make that three o'clock ... um ... traffic no longer a factor. Caution, wake turbulence.

With beauty, joy, and grace
And makes the world we live in
A better and happier place.

Thanks for being my friend!

Thanks once again to those who send in articles. Please encourage your channel folks to send in important dates for the month, channel chatter, and general news!  It shows our network's sense of continuity when we can share these events with those outside the channels we normally visit. Our network is special in the way channels support and and encourage each other like a community. For those newer to our community, our Sunday evening #Townhall meetings are an excellent opportunity to come and meet other folks that we would not normally encounter. Come join us for these meetings (okay, not so much a meeting as a block party with the occasional announcement, eduacational presentation, or sometimes even guest speakers on interesting subjects.  Join us there when you can.
