THE TRAPDOOR         Tricks, Traps, and Trouble to avoid...
Things That Go Bump on the Web ...

We've had a netwit (net nitwit) running around on our net and many others attempting to send a virus file.  Most regulars here know not to accept such things, and that's probably what has kept us from having the major troubles other nets have had - so congrats to all of you for safe chatting!  (We think we've knocked nitwit off of the net for now - but he could pop back in any time..

This is the Christmas holiday season - and it's also prime time for scammers, phishers, and other bad actors out on the net. Don't click on that "free gift" or "Holiday Wishes" link without being VERY sure what's there.

Keep your antivirus and firewall up to date.  And if you have questions, come on in to #Channels and ask - if we don't have the answer we can probably tell you where to look for it.

Be careful out there and enjoy the holiday.

First Corinthians 13 – Christmas Version

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows,
Strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls,
But do not show love to my family,
I’m just another decorator.
If I slave away in the kitchen,
Baking dozens of Christmas cookies,
  Preparing gourmet meals,
Arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime,
But do not show love to my family,
 I'm just another cook.
If I work at the soup kitchen,
Carol in the nursing home
And give all that I have to charity,
But do not show love to my family,
 It profits me nothing.
If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels
 And crocheted snowflakes,
Attend a myriad of holiday parties
and sing in the choir's cantata but  do not focus on Christ,
I have missed the point.
Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
 Love sets aside the decorating
To kiss the husband or wife.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn't envy another's home that has
Coordinated Christmas china and table linens.
Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way,
But is thankful they are there to be in the way
Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return,
But rejoices in giving to those who can't.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,
Endures all things.
Love never fails.
Video games will break; pearl necklaces will be lost,
Golf clubs will rust.
But giving the gift of love will endure.

Merry Christmas!

#40Something
Obiwan shared this with me.  Gngrbrd and I had the program choose a name for us.  We were blessed with a young woman from Tennessee who is serving in the Navy, deployed in the War on Terror.  In addition to sending a Christmas gift to her, we will be keeping her in prayer.  I wanted to give you the opportunity to remember our troops this Christmas, too.  This is one of the organizations I use to send stuff to our troops all over the world.

During the ordering process, you can choose the branch-of-service, the general service locale, the home state, etc. of the recipient.    Also, you can choose from pre-written greetings, messages, salutations and signoffs. TfT makes it quite easy for you.  You can also move from bio to bio, 'till one of them fits your criteria... like: favorite music; fav. idol; fav. movie;...etc.   Everything is conducted anonymously. Notes of thanks, if any, etc. are processed by TfT and forwarded to you.

There's a bunch of treat assortments you can choose from.   I usually send a bunch of AT&T phone cards, since that's amongst the most frequently requested items, from reading the registered bios of potential recipients.   I think you can purchase a single-card pack but, I usually get the 6-card packs, 120 minutes per card... that way they can share with others in their organization if they so choose.   The 6-card pack is ~ $50.00.
Whatever you can afford, they'll appreciate.
Please don't forget them this Christmas.

While this is the time of year we spend with family and friends, let us not forget those who have not. Dig a little deeper into your wallets and hearts this year and make a contribution to a worthy cause. Cody's Wheels of Hope still needs donatations in order to continue sending wheeled toys to children with life threatening illnesses.

CWOH have gone 'international' and are now getting requests from Canada. Wagons and bicycles have been sent recently to Ontario. Thank-you to those who have sent a donation to CWOH. With your gifts of love we have reached the goal of three bicycles. However, there are still sick children in the U.S. and Canada, who need a reason to smile.  Buttons and pins will continue to be sent to those who make a donation, and write "Momma's House" on the check, up to and including Feb. 4, 2007.

Endurance, Shackleton's Incredible Voyage
By Alfred Lansing
Originally published in 1959, Hardcover, by McGraw-Hill
ASIN: B000ESO1V2

This book has been published numerous times in numerous forms. It is available in hardcover, paperback, new, used, audio cassette (audio book), audio download, DVD, and audio CD. Prices range from $.35 to $45.43 for the large print hardcover version.

"Never for me the lowered banner, never the last endeavor." Sir Ernest Shackleton

I am going to Antarctica. When you read this, I will be in Antarctica. It is the fulfillment of a life dream and I am, of course, very excited and anticipate an amazing adventure. This book was recommended reading. It opened up a whole new world to me; somehow I have missed this book and its historical drama all this time.
Sir Ernest Shackleton set off from England on the Endurance on August 8, 1914. The Endurance stopped in Buenos Aires, Argentina to pick up the last of the crew members and 69 Canadian sled dogs; one of the crew members was Frank Hurley, an Australian photographer. There were 27 crew members onboard. After battling through thousands of miles of ice packed seas for six weeks, the Endurance was locked inside an island of ice before it could make landfall on the Antarctica continent.

A haunting excerpt:
..."The order to abandon ship was given at 5 p.m. For most of the men, however, no order was needed because by then everybody knew that the ship was done and that it was time to give up trying to save her. There was no show of fear or even apprehension. They had fought unceasingly for three days and they had lost. They were simply too tired to care.

"Frank Wild, the second-in-command, made his way forward along the buckling deck to the crew's quarters. There, two seamen, Walter How and William Bakewell, were lying in the lower bunks. Both were very nearly exhausted from almost three days at the pumps; yet they were unable to sleep because of the sounds the ship was making.

"She was being crushed.  Not all at once, but slowly, a little at a time. The pressure of ten million tons of ice was driving in against her sides."...

Shackleton and his crew returned home, to the last man. The story of their survival on ice floes for more than a year and a half, when there were no satellite phones, rescue helicopters or Patagonia boots, is bound to reach the coldest heart. Shackleton proved himself a born leader. The book, written in 1959, is chock full of specific facts because the author had the advantage of talking to survivors, reading actual journals that were kept and the memories of those survivors and their families who heard the stories many times. Some of the obstacles the men faced and overcame are just flat out hard to fathom. The pictures taken mainly by Hurley, will survive forever now.

The author, Alfred Lansing, was a native of Chicago. He served over five years in the Navy and enrolled at Northwestern University to major in journalism. He edited a weekly newspaper in Illinois, joined United Press and in 1952 became a freelance writer. Endurance was his first book. He died in 1975.
My trip will be in a well-outfitted exploration vessel and I am quite sure that I will often remember the struggles Shackleton and his men had, when I get a little irritated at cold feet or fingers. If I should, (and they tell me everyone does at least once), get my feet wet, I will remember what those men endured out in the open with low rations and little shelter. If I slip up on the ice when I go to see the penguins or get splashed when I explore in a kayak, I will not complain

Meanwhile, until I write my own book about Antarctica, I recommend this one - in whatever form you can get. You can read it on the web, free of charge, and hear parts of the audio online. There have been and will continue to be exhibits and celebrations of this amazing journey. Enjoy some part of it. This true story awakens the adventure and tickles the curiosity that rest dormant in most of us.

PETS AND PESTS         Critters   by Momma
If you have questions, interesting facts or suggestions, other notable news concerning pets and pests, please submit them to the newsletter with Pets and Pests in the subject line

Here are a few tips to help keep your family pets safe and happy over the holiday season.
  • A decorated tree poses many hazards. Tinsel, garland, flocking, and artificial snow can be dangerous. The tree may also be coated with potentially harmful fire retardant, fertilizer, or insecticide. Larger decorating lights can become hot and cause burns. Low hanging lights and ornaments can be especially attracting.
  • Many of the foods we set out during the holidays can be toxic to pets, including chocolate (bakers, semi sweet, milk, dark), sugary cookies, salty snacks, and other favorites left out for nibbling and, of course, alcoholic drinks.
  • Tape, ribbons, and the inks and metals used in some gift wraps could cause problems if eaten.
  • Snow globes often contain antifreeze, which is poisonous to pets.
  • Pine needles, when ingested, can puncture holes in a pet's intestine. So keep pet areas clear of pine needles.
  • The extra cords and plugs of holiday lights and other fixtures can look like chew toys to pets. Tape down or cover cords to help avoid shocks, burns or other serious injuries. Unplug lights when you are not home.
  • Do not let pets drink the holiday tree water. Some may contain fertilizers, and stagnant tree water can harbor bacteria. Check labels for tree water preservatives and artificial snow, and buy only those that are nontoxic. Some folks use screens around trees to block access to electrical cords and gifts.
  • Very important: do not put aspirin in the water (some folks do this thinking it will keep the tree or plant more vigorous). If a pet ingests the aspirin-laced water, his health or even life can be at risk.
  • Pets, particularly cats, can be tempted to eat tinsel, which can block the intestines. Hang tinsel high and securely to keep it out of reach of pets.
  • Keep other ornaments out of reach of pets. Ingestion of any ornament, which might look like toys to pets, can result in life-threatening emergencies. Even ornaments made from dried food can lead to ailments. And remember, shards from broken glass ornaments can injure paws, mouths and other parts of the body.
  • Put away toys after children open their gifts. Small plastic pieces and rubber balls are common causes of choking and intestinal blockage in dogs. Ingested plastic or cloth toys must often be removed surgically.
  • Avoid toxic decorations. Bubbling lights contain fluid that can be inhaled or ingested, snow sprays and snow flock can cause reactions when inhaled, styrofoam poses a choking hazard, tinsel can cause choking and intestinal obstruction, and water in snow scenes may contain toxic organisms such as Salmonella.
  • Keep candles on high shelves. Use fireplace screens to avoid burns.
  • Discourage guests from bringing their own dog or other pet into your home. If they do, understand that your pet and theirs are sure to be anxious. Keep them separated and do not relax your vigilance.
  • Holiday guests and other activity can be very stressful and even frightening to pets. It can also trigger illness and intestinal upset. Make sure pets have a safe place to retreat in your house. And make sure they are wearing current I.D. in case they escape out a door when guests come and go.
  • Reduce stress by keeping feeding and exercise on a regular schedule.
Happy Holidays!

Just a holiday season FYI for those shopping for a decent AV package (i.e. replacement for Norton's) or a good internet security "suite".   Hey, be different with Christmas gifts this year! Nothing says you care quite like a good virus scanner, I always say.

Normally, it's safe to ignore online reviews of this stuff because, well, usually the reviewer has an agenda, deadline, or other reason to provide a nice looking but wrong answer. In this case, however, these two pages are pretty on-target.  Good for Cnet (about time).

The StarLink-IRC Birthday Bash !!!
Dec 29 through Jan 1- check the web site above for details.
Win prizes. Share stories. Or just have fun.

foo! FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information
...brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnid

Ok here it is the SL-IRC TENTH anniversary follies.
bye.
 -------

Oh wait. Ok need some slander ^H^H^H^H^H^H gossip ^H^H^H^H^H^H news for this issue.

One of the prizes we might give away during the bash is a "get out of folllies free" card good for one free ride on ONE event.  Most folks do more than one at a time so its a fairly useless prize.  Brought to you by IMI, could you guess?

This month, on a Christmas theme, we have an amazing story about an amazing event that one of the staff (who shall remain, amazingly, nameless)

This is an actual channel log. I could never make this stuff up this well. Note, * has been used to protect the identity of the guilty.

<IronHawk> and they told me i could drink from the fountain
* A*azing actually did that one time NOL..hehehe
<NOLady> see what 12 years of catholic schooling did to me?
<Am*zing> went into a catholic church...had never been in one before...
* NOLady tryin to find a rosary to pray for mazie even though i ain't catholic anymore
<IronHawk> i strangly enough use to like the paddlings go figure
<Ama*ing> actually it was the Abby not too far from here...
<NOLady> IronHawk's gonna get demerits for that one
<Amaz*ng> saw folks doing something with the water...couldnt see what they were doing..
<IronHawk> but i am not cathlic
<Amazi*g> so i followed...put my hands in the water...and didnt know what to do with it so put my fingers in my mouth and cleaned them off...lol
<IronHawk> that should make the follies
[ note - seems that it did]
<IronHawk> never take amazing to a catholic churc she drinks the wholy water
<NOLady> there is a joke about that but i can't tell it without gettin in trouble

And this person tried to get OUT of the follies by ratting out somebody else. (The follies are just SO good for finding out these things).

As it happens, one of our other staff who owns a scooter ended up on I-40 in NC by taking a ramp by mistake. THAT had to be exciting.

And not to make a point of it but has anybody noticed it seems to be the SAME people who have two specific problems?
A)  Bad judgment
B) The right, but not the ability, to remain silent.

Welcome to my world.

Til next time .. Happy Christmas and Merry New Year

Thanks to Makk AND ItsyDad for this one!

   1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

   2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it's rare. In fact, it's even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

   3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy . Eat the volcano. Repeat.

   4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

   5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

   6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

   7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

   8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

   9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

   10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

 Have a great holiday season!

Thanks to Momma for this one!!
REMEMBER THIS AT CHRISTMAS TIME

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeers grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeers retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl.

We should've known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat-a** man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost. Be honest, we knew that all along.

IN MEMORIAM.
Those who have moved on
In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and great artist, MikeChat.  He is sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to call him friend.  How blessed we are that Mike shared so much of himself and his beautiful art on StarLink-IRC. Mike himself wrote a poem for TooShy when her daughter died, and we’d like to share it with you here.

you may ask why I dont weep for thee
but I know that it is I who is sad
for you are free
no longer bound to this sorrow laden earth are you
but fly free of the bonds , to begin anew
we who stay behind , and wave our farewells
like friends upon the shore who bid Bon Voyage
as your ship crests the swells and return  each of us to our daily task
to wait our turn , to fly free , at last....

Thanks once again to those who send in articles. Please encourage your channel folks to send in important dates for the month, channel chatter, and general news!  It shows our network's sense of continuity when we can share these events with those outside the channels we normally visit. Our network is special in the way channels support and and encourage each other like a community. For those newer to our community, our Sunday evening #Townhall meetings are an excellent opportunity to come and meet other folks that we would not normally encounter. Come join us for these meetings (okay, not so much a meeting as a block party with the occasional announcement, eduacational presentation, or sometimes even guest speakers on interesting subjects.  Join us there when you can.
