#Crittercat
The Evolution of #CritterCat -- Is that possible??
- by critter-
As I sit here in my rocking chair, creaking back and forth, reminiscing about the beginning of the internet access that came to the cariboo region of B. C. Canada in 1994. Have times changed since then. For $24.95/month, I was given 1 hour/day. They had no competition. So this was good if you wanted it.
Shortly after we connected, and played around online, looking up websites, checking to see if gopher was really useful, or what telnet was even about, a fella from Williams Lake, who wrote a column on the internet, decided to have IRC meetings once a month. Here we could share our experiences, good or bad, discuss what's new and basically get to know 'virtually' who was in the channel. We met on the efnet, in a channel called #caught_in_net. The first meeting I thought I was the only woman there, but soon realized that 'willy' from Williams Lake was far too feminine to be masculine. We women decided we had better stick together!
'willy' knew a lot about different 'nets and servers, so we ventured to the undernet and set up shop, discussing what new and exciting experiences we had.
It wasn't too long before 'willy' decided she needed a more suitable nick, after all, her buddy was the 'cute & cuddly' critter, so she ended up nicknaming herself after her cat, Tree........hence treecat. And she gives a whole new meaning to the word 'animal'. Sorry tc, couldn't resist it!!! :)
We tried to come up with a name for our channel and treecat came up with #CritterCat. Sharing both our nicknames.
The channel #CritterCat was popping up everywhere we went. We would set it up to go to those monthly meetings on the efnet and laugh about how some of these know-it-all men actually knew very little. We would get there early and have ops. We were so mean!
The undernet grew and the 'lag monster' visited a little more regular than we had hoped. so treecat found other 'nets we could try to set up on. There were a few of them before we found our StarLink-IRC home. A lot of our channel buddies followed us, and still come to visit. Some more regular than others.
We usually consist of treecat, critter, Guston, Deer, pinkcat, canuk, Conan, maia, Corinne, ducky (McQuack), andrew, ZoBB, and of course we can't forget Cstar or Laz. Come visit us sometime and enjoy the idle chat.......

WHO'S DOING WHAT?
by lois

There is a new potential StarLink-IRCer...Wullie had a new grandson, Johnathan, botn December 4th. That makes grandchild number five for lucky Wullie!

Kookum of #1 is finally at home after her second major heart surgery, and is busy sending out her jokes every night. She reports that the second man involved in the killing of her son has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without chance of parole. The first man was given the same sentence in October.

Gyrene of #norwich is looking forward to a vacation the week after Christmas in the Poconos and asks that we all send snow his way so he can get in some snowmobiling and snowboarding.

Thanks to TooShy, MikeChat and #mirc_colors for putting on another great color show. This time it was a Christmas color show held on Dec 5th. At one point there were 58 users in the channel, and an encore was held for another 40 users. Everyone was so impressed that they wanted to have it shown again, which TooShy and MikeChat agreed to do on Dec 17th. Many thanks again from StarLink-IRC for all yOur hard work. It has been greatly appreciated.

Minn-Joe of Las Vegas (#norwich) has returned from his 25-day trip to Australia, declaring that trip "the best!". You can see pictures of him feeding baby kangaroos on his home page: http://www.wizard.com/~jraymond/ His tour guide says, "It is only time to go home when you start looking like your passport!"

Ant18 in NZ (#norwich) recently made a business trip to Switzerland, Budapest, Brussels and Frankfurt. Due to lots of snow and many hours in the airport in Frankfurt, she took a roundabout way back to NZ, via Chicago and Los Angeles!

Sinbad (of no fixed address) became a grandad (again). Congrats!

FOGWEB FOLLIES
A short column of made-up facts and non-information brought to you by your friendly neighborhood arachnid

Somebody Get a File and Saw Dept. There is a malicious rumor going about that an unnamed op managed to lock themselves out of their own channel. Tis suspected that the person (known here as chee^H^H ) fell into a trap generally reserved for newbies or server admins.

There was a cute piece here about db. It was removed.

Fickle Follies: Well, this reporter is sad to say the hotsy totsy thing between #crittercat and #just4fun seems to have cooled off. No one is talking, but it has been awful hard to get into #crittercat and #babyboomers some nights .. so one just wonders exactly WHAT is going on. If i find out you can bet you wont read it here (we are a family net .. although, well, you know, you could read that a couple ways ... )

Sources insist there is NO truth to the fact that one of the ops in a long standing channel has won huge amounts in the lottery and is giving out giant chunks of cash if you message them 500 times with the magic word. Don't know who it is? Well, theres one way to find out .....

And since this is the holiday season, everyone needs to pick out gifts

.. once again, Itsy MegaIndustries, Inc (IMI) rises to the occasion by providing a way to separate you from your money, er, to provide that PERFECT gift for the person who has everything... The IMI (pat pending) ULTRA LiteWeight Keyboard Frame .. this is the ONE product you just MUST have. Using space age technology, the ULWKF is made of powdered aluminum and magnesium for weight savings.

Hmmm.. theres another name for that mix .. I just cant seem to remember...

Til next time, have a happy holiday!

Oh.. now i remember.. thermite. Powdered aluminum and magnesium is thermiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite

*whoumph*

SOLITAIRE, ANYONE?

Check out a site where you can play Tournament Solitaire every day. The Skinner boys (willco, deano and sharkie), manage to win easily over the other players. If you want to join these cardsharks, go to http://www.trwest.com/games/sol.htm

Do not put your name and info in until the cards turn up, and the cards are slow at the beginning but pick up later on. There are three types of Solitaire to play, with instructions, and you can play three games of each kind. Tournament and Random Play can be chosen. If you need any other help, contact lois@chatlink.com, who can help you do anything but win!

CHRISTMAS ON THE WEB

There are hundreds of sites, offering you Christmas crafts, recipes, things to keep the kiddies busy, places to write to Santa Claus, home decorating, Christmas midis and many others, including a site which tracks Santa's trip on Christmas Eve via videocam! Just type into your search engine "christmas" and you'll be surprised what shows up!

Have you ever had anyone tell you that your gravy was like the stuff they paint on the aircraft carrier decks? Well, you can cure all that before Christmas dinner by checking out the Gravy page at http://food.epicurious.com/b_ba/b02_class/gravy/gravy.html

Even if you don't plan to have Spam for your Christmas dinner, here is a page designed to give you some laughs at the expense of Spam in a Can: http://www.cusd.claremont.edu/~mrosenbl/spam.html
Be sure to check out the links.

(And remember, holiday fat grams don't count because of the high nostalgia content!)

SAFE IRC-ING: A class on Safe IRC-ing was held in #Townhall on Monday, December 14th. A big thanks to Wullie, chief301, Lt_Ed and Itsy for a job well done in helping the users understand what "safe" IRC-ing is all about.

The text of the class is available on the webpage at www.starlink-irc.org/index.docs.html. It was great to see so many users come to the class and particpate in the question and answer period at the end.

    BACK ORIFICE TROJAN HORSE

There have been many people on StarLink-IRC who have helped users in getting rid of some of the malicious files that have been dcc'd to them. We would like to thank each and every one who has helped. Also, there are lots of webpages that have help on eliminating these files. Just do a search for "back orifice".

Important: If you happen to have Auto-Get enabled in your DCC/Options...please turn it OFF.

There are two people that I have called on in these situations to help users and I would like to thank Whobear and Wullie for always helping when asked and for being so very patient with users who have accidentally received hese files. Thanks, guys!!

---- A MICROSOFT CHRISTMAS ----

'Twas the night before Christmas,
when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
except Papa's mouse.
The computer was humming,
the icons were hopping,
As Papa did last-minute Internet shopping.

The stockings were hung by the modem with care
In hope that St. Nicholas would bring new software.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of computer games danced in their heads.

PageMaker for Billy, and Quicken for Dan,
And Carmen Sandiego for Pamela Ann.
The letters to Santa had been sent out by Mom,
To santaclaus@toyshop.northpole.com -
Which has now been re-routed to Washington State
Because Santa's workshop has been bought by Bill Gates.
All the elves and reindeer have had to skedaddle
To flashy new quarters in suburban Seattle.

After centuries of a life that was simple and spare,
St. Nicholas is suddenly a new billionaire,
With a shiny red Porsche in the place of his sleigh,
And a house on Lake Washington that's just down the way
From where Bill has his mansion. The old fellow preens
In black Gucci boots and red Calvin Klein jeans.
The elves have stock options and desks with a view,
Where they write computer code for Johnny and Sue.

No more dolls or toy soldiers or little toy drums (ahem - pardon me)
No more dolls or tin soldiers or little toy drums
Will be under the tree, only compact disk ROMS
With the Microsoft label. So spin up your drive,
From now on Christmas runs only on Win95.

More rapid than eagles the competitors came,
And Bill whistled, and shouted, and called them by name.
"Now, ADOBE! now, CLARIS! now, INTUIT! too,
Now, APPLE! and NETSCAPE! you are all of you through,

It is Microsoft's SANTA that the kids can't resist,
It's the ultimate software with a traditional twist -
Recommended by no less than the jolly old elf,
And on the package, a picture of Santa himself.

Get 'em young, keep 'em long, is Microsoft's scheme,
And a merger with Santa is a marketer's dream.
To the top of the NASDAQ! to the top of the Dow!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away - wow!"

And Mama in her 'kerchief and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
The whir and the hum of our satellite platter,
As it turned toward that new Christmas star in the sky,
The SANTALITE owned by the Microsoft guy.
As I sprang from my bed and was turning around,
My computer turned on with a Jingle-Bells sound.

And there on the screen was a smiling Bill Gates
And I heard them exclaim in voice so bright,
Next to jolly old Santa, two arm-in-arm mates.
Have a MICROSOFT CHRISTMAS,
and TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.

RUSTY CHEVROLET (Dedicated to Willco)
Sung to "Jingle Bells"

Dashing through the snow in my rusty Chevrolet.
Down the road I go, sliding all the way.
I need new piston rings. I need some new snow tires.
My car is held together by a piece of chicken wire!
Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke, the door just blewaway.
I light a match to see the dash and then I start to pray-ay.
The frame is bent, the muffler went, the radio's okay.
Oh, what fun it is to drive this rusty Chevrolet!
I went to IGA, to get some Christmas cheer.
I just passed up my left front tire and it's gettin' hardto steer.
Speeding down the highway, right past the county cops.
I have to drag my swampers just to get the car to stop.
Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke, the door justblew away.
I light a match to see the dash and then I start to pray-ay.
The frame is bent, the muffler went, the radio's okay.
Oh, what fun it is to drive this rusty Chevrolet!
Bouncing through the snowdrifts in a big, bluecloud of smoke.
People laugh as I drive by; I wonder what's the joke!
I have to get to Wal-Mart to pick up my layaway,
Cause Santa's comin' soon in his big, old, rusty sleigh!
Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke, thedoor just blew away.
I light a match to see the dash and then I start to pray-ay.
The frame is bent, the muffler went, the radio's okay.

Oh, what fun it is to drive this rustttttttttyChevroooooooleeeeeet!

THE TWELVE GIFTS OF CHRISTMAS
Allan Sherman

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A Japanese transistor radio.

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me Green polka-dot pajamas, And a Japanese transistor radio. (It's a Nakashuma.)

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A calendar book with the name of my insurance man, Green polka-dot pajamas, And a Japanese transistor radio. (It's the Mark IV model. That's the one that's discontinued.)

On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A simulated alligator wallet, A calendar book with the name of my insurance man, Green polka-dot pajamas, And a Japanese transistor radio. (And it comes in a leatherette case with holes in it, so you can listen right through the case.)

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A statue of a lady, with a clock where her stomach ought to be, A simulated alligator wallet, A calendar book with the name of my insurance man, Green polka-dot pajamas, And a Japanese transistor radio. (And it has a wire with a thing on one end that you can stick in your ear, and a thing on the other end that you can't stick anywhere, because it's bent.)

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A hammered aluminum nutcracker, And all that other stuff, And a Japanese transistor radio.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A pink satin pillow that says San Diego, with fringe all around it, And all that other stuff, And a Japanese transistor radio.

On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me An indoor plastic birdbath, And all that other stuff, And a Japanese transistor radio.

On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A pair of teakwood shower clogs, And a Japanese transistor radio.

On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me A chromium combination manicure scissors and cigarette lighter, And a Japanese transistor radio.

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me An automatic vegetable slicer that works when you see it on television, but not when you get it home, And a Japanese transistor radio.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, although it may seem strange, On the twelfth day of Christmas, I'm going to exchange: An automatic vegetable slicer that works when you see it on television, but not when you get it home, A chromium combination manicure scissors and cigarette lighter, A pair of teakwood shower clogs, An indoor plastic birdbath, A pink satin pillow that says San Diego, with fringe all around it, A hammered aluminum nutcracker, A statue of a lady, with a clock where her stomach ought to be, A simulated alligator wallet, A calendar book with the name of my insurance man, Green polka-dot pajamas, And a Japanese transistor radio.
