AMAZING AND LESSER THINGS!

|
Amazing didn't have anything for us this month but we look forward to
next month's submission!
SOME people simply skip a month if there is nothing newsworthy.
Others, who shall remain nameless, make things UP!!!
HEY! ??? i think that was a remark addressed to
certain artistic license taken in certain columns in this newsletter. i
should ignore it since its obviously in response to a comment about the
'map challenged' members of our sl-irc team who will also remain
nameless. <itsy>
Thanks to everyone for making StarLink-IRC the wonderful
cybertown that it is! As some of you might know, there are other
nets out there with the word 'starlink' in them. When telling your
friends about what net you chat on -- PLEASE make sure you say StarLink-IRC.Org. And don't forget There is a quicklist at http://www.starlink-irc.org/serverlist.html

#50+Chat_Trivia
Hi Gang!
Can you believe it? Our channel is about to celebrate it's SECOND
ANNIVERSARY!
To celebrate Valentine's Day and the date the channel was originally
created, I would like you to join me for a party on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY
14 at 7:00 PM CST until
On SUNDAY, MARCH 21st at 7:00 PM CST, we will gather at the channel for
another Party to celebrate our second full year on Starlink-IRC.
BTW BYOB! <grin> I’ll bring the snacks!
(Chat_Triv says she wants chocolate!)
Time for both dates will be 7:00 PM CST, that's 8:00 PM East Coast,
6:00 PM Mountain Time and 5:00 PM West Coast. I hope you will all
join me to celebrate.
Just wanted to let you all know some history about our channel …..
On February 16, 2002, this channel was built and installed. Our
first home was on DalNet. Little did I know at the time that the
channel would grow to what we have today. The game started out
with less than 70,000 questions. Everyone enjoyed the concept of
“Chat & Trivia” and we grew slowly. DalNet gave us some real pains
…. Lag …. Inconsistent connections … etc.
On March 24, 2002, I moved the channel to Starlink-IRC. What a
GREAT home we found on Starlink-IRC. Very little lag … wonderful
support staff. We grew and grew and grew. Through all our
efforts we have added new questions to the game, and today are proud to
say we have about 250,000 questions in the program. We’ve had our
mishaps …. My computer crashing …. And people having withdrawal
symptoms from no Trivia …. But we have survived. And I’m proud of
the channel we have today. We have a great group of Ops and so
many wonderful players. The website idea popped into my head one
day while watching the bantering back and forth between the players ….
I decided it had to be done …. Here we were, the Peanuts Gang!
And so, after much hard work, the website was designed. I was so
proud of it that I decided we had to have our own Domain Name
www.chat-trivia.com. What a tribute to you all.
We the members of #50+Chat_Trivia represent a wide variety of people
from all over the world.
Love and many hugs to all you wonderful people!

contributed by everyone
In
an attempt to get more of our chatters involved in our newsletter and
to make it more interesting, we are adding several new columns.
The recipe column has been very popular! I hear tell there is a
movie critic's corner starting soon. That's exciting!! I'd
love to see a gardening column if that's an area of expertice for any
of you. Maybe even a book review column would be nice?
Please get together with me if you have other ideas or if you're
willing to do a column for our newsletter!

Maybe Mabel Knows?
One of the ideas we had is for an advice column, layman's advice,
motherly/fatherly advice, NOT professional advice:
You don't need Ann Landers when WE have Mable. Starlink-IRC is
proud
to announce that we searched high and low to find an advice columnist
like Mable. Problems with love, family, job, other chatters? Maybe
Mable Knows!
Submit your letters to the newsletters as usual with Maybe Mable Knows
as the subject and they will be forwarded to the proper newsletter desk.
ALL identities will be protected with false names. If you
don't come up
with one of your own, a false identity will be assigned to you.
Thanks to momma of #Momma^s_House for offering to write a
column for our newsletter! Each month momma will bring us news
from the animal kingdom. If you have questions, interesting facts
or suggestions, other notable news concerning pets and pests, please
submit them to the newsletter with Pets and Pests in the subject line.
Hi! Hopefully this new column in the Starlink-IRC newsletter will be
fun and informative. While I am not an expert by any means, I am an
animal lover. I also owned and opertated C.J.'s Pets & Supplies for
5 years, as well as been a breeder of Pugs for 12 years, and until a
fire many years ago was owner and operater of CharJon's Rabbitry for
over 12 years. I travelled the 'show circut' with my bunnies, chaired
many Rabbit Clubs and organised many of the competions, not to mention
judged the children's entries at fun Pet and Poultry shows. At the
moment I own 5 dogs, 4 cats, several aquariums, and I feed every stray
for miles around, including a family of possums and a raccoon who have
set up housekeeping under my porch!
For those of you who live in wintery climates, think about our
feathered friends. Winter time is hard on the birds. They are unable to
find food easily and depend on us to give them a helping hand.
Try using bird seed to add traction over ice on your walkways. This
helps keep you from slipping and feeds the birds. Road crews in some
areas sprinkle salt to combat ice. When birds eat the salt, their bones
become brittle, and it can affect the shell of eggs laid in the spring.
We can help!
Save your egg shells from breakfast, let them dry out. You can place
them in the oven for a short time. This can be easily done after you
have baked a cake or cooked dinner, and you have turned your oven off.
Crush the dried shells and either mix them in with your wild bird seed
or sprinkle them freely over your yard and walkways. They will not harm
your lawn come spring. Plus the added calcium introduced into the wild
birds diet will help produce stronger healthier shells for a new batch
of feathered offspring!
Blue Jays like raw peanuts in the shell. These can be purchased at any
feed store and are relatively inexpensive. You can enjoy hours of funny
antics watching these beautiful birds picking up and discarding the
peanuts. It appears as if they are 'weighing' them looking for the
heaviest and best one! The shells that they drop will make a good
compost for your garden.
Don't add to the unwanted pet population, get your pet spayed or
nutered.

Laughter Is Good Medicine!
Thanks to treecat for this one!
Kids say (and write) the darnedst things!
The following excerpts are actual answers given on history tests and in
Sunday school quizzes by children between 5th and 6th grade in Ohio.
They were collected over a period of three years by two teachers.
Read carefully for grammar, misplaced modifiers, and of course,
spelling!
Ancient Egypt was old. It was inhabited by gypsies
and mummies who all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah
Dessert. The climate Of the Sarah is such that all the inhabitants have
to live elsewhere.
--
Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea where they made unleavened
bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on
Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandos. He died before he ever reached
Canada but the commandos made it.
--
Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines. He was a
actual hysterical figure as well as being in the bible. It sounds Like
he was sort of busy too.
--
The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we
wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a young
female moth.
--
Socrates was a famous old Greek teacher who went around giving people
advice. They killed him. He later died from an overdose of wedlock
Which is apparently poisonous. After his death, his career suffered a
Dramatic decline.
--
In the first Olympic games, Greeks ran races,
jumped, hurled biscuits, and threw the java. The games
were messier then than they show on TV now.
--
Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The
Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made
king. Dying, he gasped out "Same to you, Brutus."
--
Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was canonized by Bernard Shaw for
reasons I don't really understand. The English and French still have
problems.
--
Queen Elizabeth was the "Virgin Queen," As a queen she was a success.
When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted "hurrah!"
and that was the end of the fighting for a long while.
--
It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented
removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the
circulation of blood.
--
Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented
Cigarettes and started smoking.
--
Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper which
was very dangerous to all his men.
--
The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was
born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much
money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies,
comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter.
--
Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote
Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote
Paradise Lost. Since then no one ever found it.
--
Delegates from the original 13 states formed theContented Congress.
Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two
singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered
electricity by rubbing two cats backward and also declared, "A horse
divided against itself cannot stand." He was a naturalist for sure.
Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead.
--
Abraham Lincoln became America's greatest Precedent. Lincoln's Mother
died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his
own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation
Proclamation.
--
On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to the theater and got
shot in his seat by one of the actors in a moving picture show. They
believe the assinator was John Wilkes Booth, a supposingly insane
actor. This ruined Booth's career.
--
Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large
number of children. In between he practiced on an old spinster which he
kept up in his attic. Bach died from 1750 to the present. Bach was the
most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half
German, half Italian, and half English. He was very large.
--
Bethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf that he
wrote loud music and became the father of rock and roll. He took long
walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven
expired in 1827 and later died for this.
--
The nineteenth century was a time of a great many thoughts and
inventions. People stopped reproducing by hand and started reproducing
by machine. The invention of the steamboat caused a network of rivers
to spring up.
--
Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a
hundred men.
--
Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbits but I don't know why.
--
Charles Darwin was a naturalist. He wrote the Organ of the Species. It
was very long people got upset about it and had trials to see if it was
really true. He sort of said God's days were not just 24 hours but
without watches who knew anyhow? I don't get it.
--
Madman Curie discovered radio. She was the first woman to do what she
did. Other women have become scientists since her but they didn't get
to find radios because they were already taken.
--
Karl Marx was one of the Marx Brothers. The other three were in the
movies. Karl made speeches and started revolutions. Someone in the
family had to have a job, I guess.
Thanks to Amazing for this one!
The day finally arrives. Forrest Gump dies and goes to Heaven.
He walks up to the Pearly Gates and is met by St. Peter
himself. The good saint says: "Well, Forrest, we're glad to see
you." We have heard a lot about you.
I must let you know however, that the place is filling up fast,
so we have been giving an entrance examination to everyone. The
test is short but you have to pass before you can get into heaven.
You need to answer these three questions:
1. What days of the week begin with the letter "T"?
2. How many seconds are there in a year?
3. What is God's first name?
Forrest says, "Well, the first one -- that's an easy one. There are
two of them - Today and Tomorrow." The saint's eyes open
wide in surprise: "Forrest, that's not what I was thinking, but
... I'll give you credit for that answer."
"How about the second question?" "Now, that one's harder," says
Forrest, "but I'll guess the answer to be twelve."
Astounded, St. Peter says, "Twelve? Twelve? Forrest, how in
Heaven's name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?"
"Shucks, there's gotta be twelve," Forrest answers, "January
2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd, etc." "Hold it" interrupts
St. Peter. "I see where you're going with this, and I'll have to
give you credit for that one, too. Let's go on to the next
and final question.
Can you tell me God's first name?" "Sure" Forrest replies, "it's Andy."
"Andy?" exclaims the exasperated and frustrated saint. "OK, I can
understand how you came up with your answers to my first two
questions, but just how in the world did you
come up with the name of 'Andy' as the first name of God?"
"Shucks," Forrest replies, "that was the easiest one of all": "ANDY
WALKS WITH ME, ANDY TALKS WITH ME, ANDY TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN."
St. Peter opens the Pearly Gates and says, "Run, Forrest, run!"
Thanks to gngrmama for this one!!
Jesus' Dad's Name
A Sunday school teacher asked her class, "What was
Jesus' mother's name?"
One child answered, "Mary."
The teacher then asked, "Who knows what Jesus' father's name was?"
A little kid said, "Verge."
Confused, the teacher asked, "Where did you get that?"
The kid said, "Well, you know they are always talking about Verge n'
Mary."

KIDS IN CHURCH
3-year-old, Reese: "Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is
His name. Amen."
--
A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a
better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I
am."
--
A. Sunday school class was studying the Ten Commandments.
They were ready to discuss the last one.
The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was.
Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, "Thou shall not take the
covers off the neighbor's wife."
--
After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all
the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him
three times what was wrong.
Finally, the boy replied, "That preacher said he wanted us brought up
in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys."
--
I had been teaching my three-year old daughter, Caitlin, the Lord's
Prayer for several evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after me the
lines from the prayer.
Finally, she decided to go solo. I listened with pride as she carefully
enunciated each word right up to the end of the prayer:
"Lead us not into temptation," she prayed,
"but deliver us some E-mail."
--
One particular four-year-old prayed,
"And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in
our baskets."
--
A Sunday school teacher asked her children, as they were on the way to
church service,
"And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?"
One bright little girl replied,
"Because people are sleeping."
--
Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother Joel were sitting
together in church.
Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud.
Finally, his big sister had had enough.
"You're not supposed to talk out loud in church."
"Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked.
Angie pointed to the back of the church and said,
"See those two men standing by the door?
They're hushers."
--
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan 3.
The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.
Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.
"If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,
'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'"
Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!"
--
A father was at the beach with his children
when the four-year-old son ran up to him,
grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore
where a seagull lay dead in the sand.
"Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked.
"He died and went to Heaven," the Dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said,
"Did God throw him back down?"
--
A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their
six-year-old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?"
"I wouldn't know what to say," the girl replied.
"Just say what you hear Mommy say," the wife answered.
The daughter bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite
all these people to dinner?"

Thanks
once again to those who sent in
articles for the newsletter. Please encourage your channel owners
and other guests to send in their important dates for the month,
channel chatter, and general noteworthy news! It really gives our
network a stronger sense of continuity when we can share these events
with those outside the channels we normally visit. One of the
things I have always cherished about our network is the way channels
support and visit and encourage other channels rather than stooping to
the pettiness of competition and exclusion and such. That's just
another testament to the character of our community! If you are
as busy as I am, you don't always have the time to get out and visit
other channels. Our Sunday evening #Townhall meetings are an
excellent opportunity to come and meet other folks that we would not
normally chat with or get to know. Come join us for these
meetings which are often informative and always fun. We usually
have refreshments, too! But you all know how that goes with
Itsy around.... not even the platters are left by the time everyone
gets there!.
